"The Lt-Gen (John Skinner) seems to have been a character. I have an old photo of a fine portrait of him and a signature too. And a lovely photo of Caroline too. As a widow she lived in a hotel on the Cromwell Road I believe. I have her copy of the Penny Catechism somewhere from the time when she must have considered becoming RC. She didn't however as she had written therein: 'impossible to accept'. She used to potter along to the Brompton Oratory. This I find interesting as I am a member of the Oratory myself, although not at Brompton but at our Oxford branch."
