Biography
From 'The Macleans of Borerray', 1946, p.5:

"The Boreray tradition is that Alexander Maclean, fourth of Boreray, was the delinquent in bringing the old conditions of tenure to an end. Alexander, however, does not appear to have been long in possession of the patrimony, for it is said that he was killed in battle shortly afterwards, in the time of Donald Gormson - probably about 1568 - so that it is reasonable to place the date of the first written lease of Boreray at about 1570." On page 21: "He appears to have contended that his brother having already met this condition (a payment of 15 cows and a bull), that he was exonerated, and that the next payment was an obligation on his son (not him)".
