From 'The Clan Gillean' 1899, page 315:
Neil Ban, second son of Donald, was the progenitor of the Macleans of Boreray. According to tradition, Patrick Roy Obeolan, lay abbot of Applecross, had three children, Norman, Austin Mor, and a daughter. From 'The Macleans of Boreray, 1946, p.2:
Hugh Macdonald of Sleat, son of Alexander, third Lord of the Isles, while on his way to North Uist, paid a friendly visit to MacLeod of Raasay..... they played taileasg [chess or draughts] and Macdonald was losing heavily.... staked his North Uist estate, and lost it. But Hugh Macdonald had been brought up in the house of Donald Maclean of Ardgour and Donald's son, Neil Ban Maclean, who was with him, emptied his sporran of coins and bought the land back for him. Macdonald later showed his gratitude by bestowing upon Neil the considerable Island of Boreray and other valuable lands in North Uist, by verbal lease. This gift may have been made at about 1460.
According to the terms of the lease Neil and his descendants for all time were given the fertile island of Boreray and the island of Lingay, and a landfall, near Ardabhorrain known as the Peighinn Bhoireach, together with the extensive tidal islands of Grimsay, and the pendicle of Claddach Carinish, both situated at the south-east end of North Uist. Also the right of a cattle drive right across North Uist from Peighinn Bhoireach on the north to the landing place at Lee on the south of North Uist. The tenure was to be "For as long as a black cow brings forth a calf, and towering wave strikes the shore".
