Can this be Alexander Campbell Maclean, of whom Allan Maclean Skinner wrote, on page 79 of his book, "Sketch of the Military Services of Lieutenant-General Skinner and his sons", though bearing a publication date of 1863:
"Amongst family incidents I must also add that, on October 14th ['1864' added in someone's handwriting] died, at his seat, Haremere Hall, and was buried October 22nd, at Etchingham, Sussex, my much-honoured and beloved cousin, Alexander Campbell Maclean. He was born 13 January, 1798. He was mercifully permitted to pass in his sleep, without illness, from this life, suddenly, but not unprepared, for his spectacles were found, that sad morning, lying on an oen page of the devotional book he used in private, on these words, "I am the Resurrection and the life," apparently his latest meditation; and in his last letter to me, writing of the death of Ronald MacDonald, he said, "It is a solemn warning to you and me, that, with him, has passed away the generation of our parents, the front rank of our family has gone, and we now stand among our children, as the foremost candidates for the grave."
His princely disposition was exhibited in a benevolence as peculiar as it was noble. He did not content himself with benefactions, as in the ordinary course of ostentatious charity, to strangers, whose enjoyment he might never see, but sought for poor relations, unfortunate associates of earlier days, and those whom the prosperous too often forget, feeding his eye and heart, upon the happiness, of those, made glad by his proffered bounty, most delicately extended before it could be asked, not forgetting, in the most genial spirit of social kindness, to provide continuous hospitality, to his contemproaries, and frequent occasions of enjoyment for his young relations, as my sorrowing children, and many others, can testify, making himself a Steward for others of those blessings which God had bountifully showered on his industry.
Improved cottages, hearty assistance, and increased comfort to all around him, proved that his servants, labourers, and poor neighbours, had in him a staunch and watchful friend.............."
