Charles McNeil Ban Maclean

As to Charles MacNiall Bhan MacLean, this is what I have: I have him born about 1636:

From the Seneachie: (p.277-278) Charles, second son of Neil Bane {NOTE: remember that the Seneachie did not list the Rev. Donald MacLean as being a son of Neil Ban MacLean, 7th of Borreray, therefore he refers to Charles as the 2nd son}, resided in Tyrie and lived in opulent circumstances; he was married to Florance, daughter of Neil Maclean of Drimnacross, by whom he had five sons: Neil; Archibald; Lachlan; and Donald. {NOTE: the Seneachie says that there were five (5) sons, but he only provides the names of four (4).}

From Clan Gillean: (p.317): Charles settled in Tiree. (p.320) - The Descendants of Terlach Mac Neil Ban. Charles, Tearlach Mac Neill Bhain, third son of the second Neil Ban of Boreray, settled in Tiree, and was in very comfortable circumstances. He married Florence, daughter of Neil of Drimnacross, and had nine children by her: Neil; Archibald; Lachlan; Donald; John; Catherine; Ann; Isabel; and Mary.

From History of the Clan MacLean, by J. P. MacLean (p. 273): Charles, the third son, known as Tearlach MacNeill Bhain, lived in comfortable circumstances, and married Florence, daughter of Neil MacLean of Drimnacross, by whom he had five sons: Neil; Archibald; Lachlan; Donald; and John. (p.274) Charles had four daughters: Catherine; Ann, Isabella; and Mary.

From The MacLeans of Borreray, by Hector Hugh MacKenzie (1946), p. 30-38: Charles, who settled in Tiree, and married Florence, daughter of Neil MacLean of Druimnacross, by whom he had nine children: Neil; Archibald; Lachlan; Donald; John; Catherine; Ann; Isabel; Margaret; and Mary. {NOTE: MacKenzie says Charles had nine (9) children, but he provides the names of ten (10) children.}

The children I have listed for them are:
Neil, who married Flora MacLean, of Arighoulan
Archibald, who married Susanna Campbell, of Scamadale
Lachlan, who married Maria Fatmangle (he d. 1752)
Donald, of Kilmoluag, who married Isabel Campbell, of Dunstaffnage
John, who married Anne MacNeil, of Lossett
Catherine, who died unmarried
Ann, who married Hector MacLean, of Ballystretrish
Isabel, who married 7/16/1705, Rev. John MacLean (b. c. 1680), Minister of Kilninian and Kilmore (eldest son of Ewen MacLean, 9th of Treshnish)
Margaret, who married Allan MacQuarrie (s/o Lachlan MacQuarrie, XIV of Ulva
Mary, who married John MacLean, 10th of Tresninish.

The only date of birth I have for any of these children is for Archibald, who married Susanna Campbell, and that is based on the following:

From the Seneachie:(p.281-282) The Rev. Archibald MacLean, second son of Charles Mac-Neil-Bane, was married to Susanna, daughter of Campbell of Scamadale; he had a numerous issue: Charles; John; Neil; Florance; Margaret; Anne; and Barbara.

From Clan Gillean: (p. 320-321) Archibald, second son of Charles Mac Neil Ban, graduated at the University of Glasgow in 1713, and became minister of Kilvicewen, or Kilfinichen, in Mull, in 1720. He was an amiable and excellent man. He married Susanna, daughter of Donald Campbell of Ardtun and Scamadale, by whom he had Charles; John; Neil; Florence; Margaret; Ann; and Barbara.

From History of the Clan MacLean, by J. P. MacLean (p.273-274): Archibald, second son of Tearlach MacNeill Bhain, and minister of Kilfinichin, married Susanna, daughter of Donald Campbell of Scamadall, by whom he had a numerous issue, nearly all of whom died young, but three sons, Charles, John, Neil, and four daughters, Florence Margaret, Ann, and Barbara, lived to maturity.

From "The MacLeans of Boreray", by Hector Hugh MacKenzie (1946), p. 31: Archibald, second son of Charles MacNiall Bhan {Charles Mac Neil Ban MacLean and Florence MacLean, of Drimnicross}, was born in 1683. He graduated at Glasgow in 1713, and became minister of Kilfinichen and Kilviceoan in 1720. He is described as an amiable and excellent man. On 20th April 1722 he married Susanna (who died 13th January 1797), daughter of Donald Campbell, of Scamadale, with issue: John; Charles; Florence; Neil; Margaret; Ann; and Barbara.

From Brian McLean (Western Australia), a descendant of Capt. Dugald MacLean and Susanna MacLeod: One book I treasure is a comparatively recent publication by The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historial Monuments of Scotland. I have Volume 3: Mull, Tiree, Coll & Northern Argyll, which you will realize covers most of the early MacLean lands. This is where I obtained my information about Rev. Archibald McLean, buried in Kilvickeon Cemetery. There is a good photo with legible inscription although I think that may not be clear on the actual stone today. A verbatim copy follows:

Who Dyed March 10 1755 AGED 76
This stone was laid here by Susanna Campbell his spouse & Charles McLean their son.

So by subtraction, depending when his birthday fell, he was born in 1679, certainly not 1683. And his death date differs from that given by MacKenzie.
