Pendlebury [Film HO 107/543-1 and 2]:
Frederick Jones was born here. A search of some pages which fall under Pendlebury in the street index did find three Jones families, but none of the fathers was called David and none of the children Frederick - there are too many pages to search properly, though the film is very clear. They may of course be in Pendleton with Sabden on film HO 107/509, or in Swinton, and anyway Frederick may already have left home - aged 16. There is no surname index to the 1841 Census for Pendleton and Pendlebury. The 1841 Census didn't indicate where people were born but if Frederick's father David Jones can be found and then found again in the 1851 Census, the latter will give this information. Another possibility might be to get Frederick's birth certificate from the parish register and details of the witnesses at the christening. The IGI date for the latter may not be accurate and I don't know yet whether St Peter's is Anglican or Catholic. If the details for Elizbabeth are correct she might have been Unitarian.
Manchester [Film HO 107/576]:
Frederick was living at 60 Portugal St, Oldham Rd, Manchester just before he married in 1847 according to the marriage certificate, so I looked for David Jones on all the records for 'Jones' in Portugal Street on HO/576, and also films HO 107/2225 and HO 107/2228 (1851 census). I found no David and no Frederick. Portugal Street is in Manchester St George and the introductory paragraph in the 1851 surnames index reads: '(this was)..... the inner core of the city with a high content of adults born distant from Manchester, with a great proportion of the poorer fraternity not usually recorded on gravestones, or in conveniently alpabetised sources such as directories, wills...........'
