"The death is announced, at the age of 68, of Mr John T Taylor, ISO., LCC, of 19 Woodchurch-road, West Hampstead.
Mr Taylor was the son of Thomas and Arabella Collis Taylor. After being educated privately, he entered the service of the trustees of the British Museum as a second-class assistant, and was promoted to the first-class in 1866. From 1874 to 1878 he acted as secretary to the Principal Librarian, and in 1878 he was promoted to the assistant-secretaryship, a post which he held until he retired from public service in 1903. While he held that position he was charged with the duty of superintending the arrangements for the removal of the Natural History collections to South Kensington and was on special service at the Narural History Museum from 1880 to 1884. In 1902 Mr Taylor had the honour of being included in the first list of those appointed by the King to be Companions of the Imperial Service order. Since his retirement he has taken an active part in social, educational, and political work. He was co--opted upon the London School Board soon after he retired from public service, and in March 1904, was returned as one of the representatives for Hampstead on the London County Council and took a prominent part in work of several of its committees, including the ?? Committee and the Special Schools ?? of which he was vice-chairman. ?? the last election of the County Council ?? 1907, Mr Taylor, who was a Unionist, was again returned, and at the first meeting of the Education Committee he was considerably interested in the work of the vacation school at the Passmore Edwards Settlement, Tavistock-place, attaching as he did great value to such schools. Mr Taylor was an earnest Churchman. For some time he had been in ill-health."
