1881 British census, supplied by Susanne Jolme, Australia (unchecked):
30 Melbourn Place, St Andrew the Less, Cambridge
Head Martha Tarrant WOOD
George Thomas TARRANT son 18yrs
Harry TARRANT son 12 yrs
Annie Louisa RAVON, niece 16 yrs
Martha Maud LUMB, niece 8 yrs
Frederic NUNN, nephew 7 yrs.
From Eileen Welcher, 2002:
Auntie Maudie (Martha Maud LUMB above) was a relation not simply a friend. She was a very jolly person on her own, but mixed up with Polly and Aunt Louie could well have led to bickering ! And again, Aunt Louie on her own was a kindly old soul.
After leaving Orchard Sreet, Maudie lived with two other cousins, Carrie ( who was kind and gentle ) and her sister (Nelly) who was not., Then Maudie came to Sherborne. ............
She did not become a Lumb by marriage, because she did not marry. I have wracked my brain on her ancestry, but it remains more or less blank. Also I have looked for a photograph which I am sure is SOMEwhere, and is not stuck down with tape, but so far I have drawn a blank there too.
Orchard Street was a humble place when Auntie Maudie lived there; she didn't have any money to speak of. However she kept it well, and we enjoyed visiting her when we were in Cambridge. Now it is upmarket -- I was astonished to see how it had changed when I was in CB some years ago.
[It seems to me highly likely that Martha Maud Lumb was the daughter of one of Martha Tarrant Wood's brothers - AR-J]
