NB: The 'Shepley Family History' file from Liz Holliday gives detailed information on the Shepley family history back to c.1500. Richard Shepley, Yeoman of The Lumn, was born c.1560 and purchased the Lumm estate at Hyde in 1612 from Sir Urian Legh of Adlington. It is said to have received its name by the fact it was the only house in the locality which had a chimney (but also Lumn means hollow). Thought to have been built 1509 or 1613, and was knocked down in 1913.
