Biography
From Clan Gillean, 1954:

Black John.... had two sons, Lachlan, known as " Lubanach," or "the astute," and Eachainn, or Hector, known as "Reganach," or "the stubborn." These two played a strong hand in the game of destiny, whereby they gained both property and standing. The sifted fact of several traditions seems to be that, having already found favour with the Lord of the Isles, they one day, in the beginning of a cruise, took him by surprise, boarded his galley, secured his person, and compelled him to give his daughter to Lachlan as his wife, along with a dowry in Mull. Lachlan's bride was a granddaughter of King Robert II. It was the influential entry of the MacLeans into the great confederacy, and the beginning of the Barony of Dowart. It was an incident quite in tune with the spirit of the times.
