Lachlan - known as "Bronnach," because of his corpulence - followed [as Chief of Clan Maclean]. He was involved in the strife which ensued upon the action of King James I, who leaving, under misleading advice, invited certain chiefs to Parliament in Inverness, put them in irons, and beheaded some of them. On their subsequent liberation, in 1429, the vassals of the Lords of the Isles gathered, gave Inverness to the flames, and ravaged Crown lands; but defeat put the Island sovereign into Tantallon Castle, and Lachlan was his fellow-captive there. Again, two years later, with Donald Balloch, he joined in the havoc of the Lennox. The king was patient and frequent in his pardons, hopefully wooing courage when he found it, even when involved with mistaken loyalties.
