In 1999 Heather Umelas, living in Ontario, Canada, was researching her family history and in particular her great grandlfather Samuel Welcher who emigrated from England (Lincolnshire). She contacted Welchers in the UK including Ikey, Elizabeth's sister Eileen, by email. Ikey couldn't help her but mentioned the enquiry to me (AR-J). So I contacted her on 8 February 2000 and she replied "I have found my Richard Welcher who married Elizabeth Andrew in Gedney Hill, Lincolnshire. I have the certificate in hand and unfortunately it
does not mention parents. I traced the family through to 1851, then they disappear from the area. My Grandfather, one of their children,
suddenly appears in Ontario, Canada, and marries in 1861. I have the entire family line from that point on. It would be nice to go back
further, however I confess it may not happen."
This led to much more email correspondence, and her family tree is given in the file 'Umelas, Heather nee Welcher_Canada'. As a result of some research I did for her in the UK she has included John Welcher and Elizabeth Merrington as Richard Welcher's parents, and they were almost certainly the parents of John Welcher Sr, this Richard's brother. The question is, is this Richard also Heather's Richard. If so, Heather is a cousin. I have not included her family tree in this one because the relationship is distant and the names many. The evidence for a connection, though circumstantial, is strong, and is included in the file 'Welchers of Manea, research'.
